With DryErase marker in hand, it looks like I’m (Carl Schaefer) schooling the great Willie Crear! In fact, in this case we were discussing when, and how, to douse the chute on a reach into the leeward mark. While each tactical situation is different, in this particular case, Willie recommended coming in a little high on the layline, then turning down to nearly DDW while gathering and dousing the chute on the weather side, then hardening up as you round the mark. The white board session was inspired by some great E scow video recently posted to the web that shows some great spinnaker hoists and douses. Technique is everything!
